Avoiding cowboys

Cowboy traders

So-called cowboy traders may not be out to cheat you in the same way as rogue traders, but they are would-be professionals without the qualifications and experience to do a good job - so it's still a con because they're pretending to be something they're not.

Once contracted, a cowboy may attempt the job but leave you with poor work that costs a lot to put right. And once things have gone wrong, you may find it's no longer possible to get hold of them.

So whenever possible, use people that have been personally recommended. Otherwise, ask the trader for references - an established professional will be happy to provide the contact details of customers who have been pleased with their work.

Buy with confidence

To help reassure you when selecting a tradesperson, Buckinghamshire Trading Standards is part of the Buy with Confidence scheme, which provides a list of local businesses that have been vetted and approved by the Trading Standards team. You can have peace of mind when using an approved member because they've all been individually checked for trustworthiness and compliance with consumer protection laws.
