Spotting scams

What is a scam?

Scams are schemes to con you out of your money.

There are many different kinds, because the fraudsters are always looking for new, unexpected ways to cheat you. Scams may arrive by post, phone call, text message or email, or from someone calling at your home.

Although anyone can fall for a scam, scammers often like to target vulnerable people because these people can be less financially aware, overly trusting, and sometimes lacking the confidence to stand up to doorstep scammers such as rogue traders.

Spotting scams

A good rule to remember is that if something seems too good to be true – especially if it comes to you unasked for – then it's very unlikely to be a genuine offer.

If you have any doubt whatsoever, then get advice from family, friends, or one of the contacts on these pages before you pay over any money – you may not be able to get it back afterwards.

Trading standards

As part of their work protecting the county’s individuals, communities and businesses, Buckinghamshire County Council Trading Standards investigate scams and cons reported by residents, though many of the issues they have to tackle are common throughout the UK.
